FAMILY TRADITIONS

As spring settles in, the mornings brighten, the birds return, and the days stretch longer—clear signs that farming season is beginning again. Soon the fields will be plowed and tilled, preparing for another harvest season filled with the activities families look forward to each year.

I’m always amazed by the work Farmer Ryan takes on as he prepares the soil, plants, waters, and tends to acres of corn, pumpkins, squash, gourds, and flowers. After a quiet winter, everything comes alive, and the long days of hard, dirty work begin. Daylight is precious, but Ryan meets each season with excitement—hopeful for growth, renewal, and the chance to bring in another plentiful harvest.

And with that harvest comes what we love most: gathering together at the Ranch, celebrating the season, and creating family traditions that last a lifetime.

When I think about family traditions, a flood of memories comes back—holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving, Christmas break, decorating the tree, and the anticipation of Christmas morning, along with Easter celebrations and 4th of July festivities. I remember long days, camping, rafting the river, boating, napping in the sun, skiing in the winter, and walking through fields of sunflowers or along sandy beaches.

Some of the sweetest moments were the simple ones: family dinners around the table, baking cookies, playing cards, taking long summer walks, picking berries, and even hunting for golf balls. We celebrated birthdays, visited pumpkin patches, and searched for the perfect Christmas tree—small rituals that shaped the rhythm of our seasons and the heart of our family life.

I can almost step back into those moments—the way memories rise up so vividly I can feel them on my skin, smell them in the air, and hear them echoing around me. The warmth of the sun, the scent of cookies in the oven, the sound of laughter at the table, the smoky sweetness of a campfire, and the soft glow of Christmas lights warming a quiet room.

I can feel the boat rocking gently on the water and the familiar joy of singing “Happy Birthday” year after year. I see the brilliant colors of fall stretching across the landscape, the excitement of choosing the perfect pumpkin, and the simple satisfaction of finding a Christmas tree that fits just right in your home.

But as I think about all this, I’m reminded that the heart of every memory are the people; the ones we share it with. The anticipation of who will be there, the memories we’ve built together, the joy on their faces, the sound of their voices, the warmth of their hugs. It’s the people who turn ordinary moments into the traditions we treasure most.

As we enter this Easter weekend, and celebrate the sacrifice that was made on the Cross, and for Resurrection Sunday, bringing Hope and Eternal Life- the Victory of Faith. I’m thankful that once again I get to share another tradition making memories with the people I love.
